What types of new construction masonry services do you offer?
We specialize in commercial, institutional, and high-end residential projects of all sizes, including the installation of structural masonry, brick veneer, concrete block (CMU) walls, stone cladding, stone sills, lintels and steps, and precast concrete elements.
Do you handle the full scope of a masonry package, including materials sourcing?
Yes, we provide full-scope masonry services from initial project estimation, through design, drafting, material selection & procurement, installation, and final cleanup, ensuring a seamless process for the general contractor and the full project team. See our full list of masonry services here.
Are your masons certified and experienced in modern masonry techniques?
Our masons are highly skilled certified journeymen and apprentices with extensive experience in the latest installation techniques, safety protocols, and best practices for modern commercial buildings as well as for heritage restoration projects. Landscape & Hardscape Masonry
What hardscape services does your division provide?
We offer comprehensive landscape masonry services, including the construction of retaining walls, outdoor fireplaces and kitchens, decorative garden walls, stone walkways, patios, and custom veneer applications for exterior features. We are happy to collaborate with landscape architects and designers, or can provide custom design services. We partner with certified professionals to offer irrigation, planting, lighting, and more. What materials do you recommend for patios and walkways?
We have installed walkways, patios, and driveways using natural stone (including granite, sandstone, and limestone), brick, and custom pavers. Our priorities when selecting materials are that they are high-quality, durable, and aesthetically pleasing. See some examples of our hardscape installations here.
How do you ensure the longevity of your landscape masonry in the Ontario climate?
When done correctly, masonry can and should last for many decades in Ontario. Proper prep, materials, and installation methods are key to success. Our teams follow both Ontario building code guidelines as well as implementing 20+ years of experience as masons in this climate.
Heritage and Partnerships
Does your masonry division handle heritage restoration projects?
Yes! In addition to our new construction services, we maintain a strong partnership with leading heritage restoration specialists Arcana Restoration Group, and often collaborate and combine our crews based on project scope. How do your partnerships with material supply companies benefit my project?
We have partnerships with high-end manufacturers like Select Stone, Owen Sound Ledgerock, Kreitmaker, Senso Group Building Supplies, and Traditional Cut Stone, as well as with historic material salvage companies like Arcana Materials. These relationships allow us priority access to high-quality brick and stone, giving our clients unique and sustainable options that aren’t available through standard supply chains. Can you help me source specific or unique masonry materials?
Yes. Our network extends to both large scale and boutique suppliers, specialized custom manufacturers, and reclaimed material yards, allowing us to source materials like custom-cut limestone, architectural terra cotta replacements, and unique heritage bricks for any project requirement. Project Logistics and Pricing
How do you price your projects?
There are many factors that inform our price estimates — every project is unique! We account for variables such as size and complexity of the masonry work, quantity and type of materials, travel distances, labour costs, and timing. If relevant to your project, we also include pricing for other service providers (such as irrigation, scaffolding, etc.) within our proposal. We are happy to consult with you to ensure you are getting the best possible value and quality of work.
Are Johnson Playfair Masonry and Johnson Playfair Scaffold the same company? What if I only want one or the other service, not both?
Johnson Playfair Masonry and Johnson Playfair Scaffold are run by the same dedicated team, but our contracts are available separately. Our founders operated the company as solely masonry services until 2019, when they decided to invest in a scaffolding division in order to better service the needs of our clients. We include our scaffold pricing in our masonry estimates, but clients are welcome to use other scaffold suppliers if preferred.
How do you handle coordination with the scaffolding division?
Being part of the same company ensures seamless integration between our masonry crews and the scaffolding team. This results in faster setup, optimized work platforms, reduced scheduling conflicts, and maximized on-site efficiency.
How far in advance should I contact you for an estimate?
We recommend engaging us during the design development phase for value engineering input but we are willing to join the conversation at any stage and can provide design consultation and drawings with a fast turnaround. Get in touch with us!
